 Astronomical Clock (Orloj)

Astronomical Clock in Prague

Astronomical Clock is a medieval astronomical clock located on the Old Town Square on the southern wall of Old Town Hall. It was constructed in 1410 by Mikuáš z Kadaně and then adjusted in 1490 by mistr Hanuš. However, there were dispjutes for quite a long time about the real author of Orloj... Orloj is composed of three main components: astronomical clock-face, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky ; "The Walk of the Apostles" what is a clockwork showing every hour walk of Apostles figures and other moving sculptures; and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. This calendar was painted in 19th century by Josef Mánes.

That is why they blinded him by iron rods one night at his house. Mistr Hanus got angry and with his helper stopped the clock in a way that nobody could repair them for 100 years.

 St. Vitus Cathedral

St. Vitus Cathedral (katedrala svateho Vita) is located within the Prague Castle. The whole name of the cathedral is St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral. It is a principal church of Czech lands and spiritual center seat of Prague´s archbishop. The Cathedral contains also the tombs of many Bohemian kings, princesses, five saints and other prominent figures. This cathedral is really an excellent example of Gothic architecture. It took almost 600 years from 1344 to 1929 to finalize the buildings to the shape as we know the Cathedral now.

Legends: There are many legends connected especially to cathedral bells. Here are some of them. One legend says that nobody can steal the bells. Who try it, dies. When putting bells on the carriage, they get so heavy that no carriage can carry them. And if so, the bells will in any case fly back to their place.

Other legend says that the bells can change their noise according to the mood of Czech people. After the White Mountain battle in 1620 (it was the 1st battle of the Thirty years war and badly influenced Czech country for next 300 years) the bells ringed so sadly that were woking up all the died saints from the cathedral´s tombs.

The next legend is that when Charles IV, was dying, the bells started to ring by themselves so as the other bells in the whole country.

The biggest Czech bell is called Zikmund and is placed in the St. Vitus Cathedral. It was so heavy that it had to be taken up to the castle by 32 horses. But nobody knew how to get the bell up to the tower. That is why the oldest king´s daughter constructed a queer machine and weaved a rope from girl´s hair. With help of the machine and the rope they managed to take the bell to the tower. However, when the scholars wanted to look into this strange machine, she told to take the machine to parts and smash them into pieces.
